The Rise of Towns

Read chapter 26 sections 1-3 and answer the following questions:

1) What led to the growth and development of Venice's trade?
2) How did the location of Flanders help it become an important trading center?
3) What were Fairs?
4) Who sponsored fairs and why?
5) How did most towns develop in the Middle Ages?
6) What was the Black Death?  How many people died from it?
7) What changes did burghers want to make in feudal laws?

Review - THE CHURCH and THE CRUSADES

Your group will research the subject you are giving (in-text book and on-web).  You will present your findings at the end of class:

KNIGHTS: 1) Peasant Crusade and Noble Crusade, The Kingdom Beyond the Sea

 LORDS: 3) Church Reform, Monks of Cluny, Pope Gregory VII, and Friars

The Medieval Church

Today we are going to finish reading chapter 25, and then answer questions 1-8 (Understanding Main Ideas) on page 397.

Late Middle Ages

Today's Objective: Students will be able to explain the lifestyles of the people in feudal society and the organization of the manors.

In groups read Chapter 24 section 3 and 4 and answer the following questions:

1) What was a code of chivalry?  Who did it apply to?  List the rules of chivalry.
2) How did Knights train for war?
3) Explain the organization of feudal Manors.
4) What was the difference between Freeman and Serfs?
5) What was a serf's life like?  Discuss the "bright" moments.
6) Why did people on a manor produce everything they needed?
7) How could serfs obtain their freedom?
8) What changes had taken place in farming by the 1200s?

In groups read chapter 24 sections 1 and 2.  Answer questions 2-4 on page 369 and outline the hierarchy of feudalism (social classes).
